After a sell out run in Bewley’s Café Theatre we are delighted to welcome the highly dramatic Friends in Berlin, a new play by Felix Brown to The Viking. It is based on the extraordinary true story of William Patrick Hitler, the son of Hitler’s half brother, Alois, and his Irish wife, Bridget Dowling.
Raised in Liverpool and abandoned by his father at a young age, William later discovers that Alois, assumed to have died in the First World War, is in fact thriving with a new wife and family, while his famous uncle is beginning his rise to power.
Arriving in Berlin in the dying days of the Weimar Republic, William immerses himself in the notoriously decadent nightlife of the city while enjoying the company of his previously unknown German relatives. He befriends a young man named Tom, a British Embassy official, who helps him negotiate the dangers and complexities of 1930’s Berlin. However, as their relationship deepens, a dark secret comes to light, casting a shadow over their bond and forcing William to confront the true nature of trust, loyalty, and survival in a world on the brink of war.
