MADEIRA - The Secrets of Sisters

Written by Michael Harnett

Directed by Vinnie McCabe

Performed by Geraldine Plunkett, Deirdre Monaghan & Brenda Brooks

‘Delivered to perfection’…truely touching and tender’..’ tour deforce performances’…’three superb performances make Madeira a memorable experience’..The Arts Review ****

Two sets of sisters meet in a Dublin café for what was expected to be a casual and friendly meeting. But suddenly, out of the blue, disturbing news emerges which shatters the atmosphere. And worse, the devastating detail will challenge their lives ever after. In heartfelt exchanges, which by turns is searing yet amazingly sensitive, the women at the heart of this drama display what it is to have immense courage and fortitude.

Starring Geraldine Plunkett, Deirdre Monaghan and Brenda Brooks, MADEIRA brings together three of Ireland’s premier actors in a new drama by Michael J. Harnett, creator of The Noble Call, Cloudspotter and Bullied. MADEIRA is deftly directed by IFTA nominated Vinnie McCabe who brings his unique dramatic sensitivity to a play which, at its heart, is a profound celebration of the love and loyalty between sisters.

THE BALLAD OF MOSSY FLOOD

A new play written and performed by Seamus O’Rourke

Mossy Flood has a knack of going the long way around a story. In so doing, he makes us laugh and examine ourselves in a way we haven’t done before. He might be an unsociable odd-ball with a big thick head, but his wrestle with the everyday is pure gold. He will always land on his feet or at least somewhere near his feet... because he is Mossy Flood... and he’s from Longford.

After a couple of appearances on social media a few years back, Mossy Flood is probably Seamus O’Rourke’s most loved character... his musings have been viewed millions of times on the internet and now, he finally has his very own show. ‘The Ballad of Mossy Flood’ might just save humanity from self-destruction.

We are delighted to welcome Seamus O’Rourke back to The Viking Theatre. His has previously played to packed houses with shows like PADRAIG POTTS GUIDE TO WALKING, INDIGESTION, SANDPARK, AND THANK YOU, THE HANDYMAN…and many more. Due to his popularity, we recommend early booking for his new show.

Matthew and Michael have both always wanted one thing. A sibling. Now all they have to do is meet. Easy right? But how do you introduce yourself to someone you should already know? Filled with anxiety, hope and no questions unasked. A tale of two brothers united at last.

This witty, hard-hitting show follows our two lads as they juggle the expectations versus the reality of having a brother. All catapulted forward by general anxiety, fear of the unknown and the reason they never got to meet in the first place - their Mam.

THE BUTTONMEN

Performed by

After two sell out runs ‘The Buttonmen returns to The Viking. If you missed the show ..now is your chance to catch this .. ‘memorable picture of the last of the Dublin dockworkers…a poignant picture..Gary Cooke generates a superb singalong atmosphere’... Katy Hayes Independent.

It centres on two brothers Dessie and Gino Dunne, both dockers.

Dessie the older brother is a Buttonman. The “Button” gives Dessie privileges and status over other dockers. Dessie loves the docks and the life of a docker. He connects with the history, customs and traditions of the place.

Gino the younger brother on the other hand is a non “Buttonman”. He has no real love for the life of a docker and rallies against what he sees as a degrading and uncertain way to earn a living.

Set in the early 1970’s change is coming to the docks of Dublin and lurking beneath the story of these two brothers is a dark underbelly of jealousy and addiction. As they talk and sing about their life on the docks of Dublin fear and danger are never far away.

A hilarious parody of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot where two unfortunate airline passengers wait at the air gate for a no-frills flight which never arrives.

Whether you love low fares travel, or loath flying cattle class, if you’ve ever wasted a day of your life snaking around the airport carpark with 10,000 other people, because there were no airport staff to x-ray your jocks, or been blackmailed into paying excess baggage fees at the gate because one of the wheels of your bag slightly protruded from the baggage sizer, or spent a romantic break stranded in a tiny airfield in the middle of nowhere because the airline lied to you and told you it was a capital city, then this is the comedy for you.

A Bolt From D’Blue

Written and performed by David Gilna.

Exquisitely uplifting, jolting and hysterical’ - THE IRISH ECHO.

Playwright David Gilna was just 18 years old when he reached out to stop a ladder from falling, only for a fork of lightning to zap him from the heavens, sending 300,000 volts of electricity through his body.

David’s heart subsequently stopped, and it took him years to recover. But the experience also changed the course of his life in more positive ways.

“Your life can be taken away in seconds, our time here is so precious,” the 36-year-old, from Swords, said.

"In this powerful one-man show "A Bolt From D'Blue," David Gilna recounts his early dreams of being a performer, his family history, his first arrival to the US, and, of course, the moment that changed his life forever: being struck by lightning. Gilna deftly guides us through the humor and horror of this near-death experience, weaving the trauma of this life-changing event into a poignant and unforgettable show. “David Gilna is a natural storyteller with an amazing story, made all the more powerful because it’s absolutely true. Bolt From D’Blue is a perfect example of what live theatre is about: "A Bolt From D'Blue" is not to be missed." David will have a different guest join him every night!

HOW TO GET THE MENOPAUSE AND ENJOY IT

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

After a sell out run in February we are delighted to welcome Anne back to the Viking. Book now to avoid disappointment.

What the audience said…'A truly funny show.' 'An absolute belly laugh.'

'The memories it brought back of when we were younger...mind blowing!'

'I can't wait to get the menopause.' 'I laughed so much, I reckon I've done some face yoga.'

Anne Gildea is waxing her moustache, slathering on the Oestrogel and boiling with excitement about bringing her fabulous new show to The Viking Theatre.

Join her on this hilarious, informative, laugh-out-loud journey through one of life’s last great mysteries – The Menopause!

What is it? Why does it happen? How come it barely bothers some women and turns others into complete batshit off-the-scale nutjobs? Is there anything you can do? And why oh why is so little commonly known about this inevitable phase of lady-life?

Anne rips through every angle as she embraces Menopause’s greatest gift:

The superpower of Not Giving a Shite!

Previously Anne has wowed audiences worldwide with The Nualas (“We’re madly in love with you.” The Scotsman), and her writings (“Irresistibly hilarious.” The Irish Times) and her sheer spanxed-up glamour (“Wow!” Some man, once)

“Never has the female body been put under such an hilarious microscope…captures perfectly the dilemma of Irish women of her generation, hobbled by the micro-oppressions of conservative Catholicism, and engaging in a lifetime of micro-battles against this force. I am definitely the target audience for this show, and it spoke directly to me. But if any young people want to know what’s really going on in their mams’ and aunties’ secret lives, this funny and taboo-busting work blasts the lid right off.”
